Erev Rosh Hashana 2001. Our oldest son Gilad, was killed in his house in a bloody gun battle with armed robbers in South Africa. He was a very special young man and my wife and I decided that the best way to keep his legacy alive would be to establish a Foundation carrying his name.
So came to be "The Gilad Shafir Foundation". The Foundation is a non for profit foundation. Basically, we are trying to promote good young people who come from very disadvantaged backgrounds all over Africa.
We understand rationally that the huge gap between "haves and have not" is the main reason behind our sons death. We are trying to contribute towards the closing of this gap.
The fields of interest we chose to concentrate on, incorporate my sons interests (he was an IT person), my wife's interests (she is an artist) as well as mine. The common denominator is that in what ever we choose to do, we try to support the closure of this gap by supporting disadvantaged young people who has the ability, but not the means.
