New Volunteer Programme in China

Nepal: Chalise Village School
When George Goldstein, a trustee of World Jewish Aid, went trekking in Nepal, his trek guide Rankesh Gurung took him back to his local village of Chalise, a remote village in Nepal to the north west of Kathmandu, four days walk from the nearest road.

Responding to the crisis

The Jewish Emergency Aid Coalition was activated on Erev Pesach to give support to the national appeal for Kosovo. Spearheaded by UKJAID, this appeal raised £150,000 from the Jewish community in two months.

MPs Warm to Small NGOs

Asia: Tsunami Disaster

World Jewish Aid’s appeal for the Asian Tsunami Disaster reached over £1.1 million as well as securing donations of medication to a total value of £1.5 million. Of this £1.9 million has gone towards funding many worthwhile projects.

An earthquake hit the Iranian city of Bam on 26 December 2003 leaving 30,000 people dead and another 80,000 homeless. The Jewish community in Iran immediately set up support systems to help their fellow citizens.

India: Gujarat Earthquake

We participated in a house building project organised by the Swaminarayan Hindu Temple in Neasden and UKJAID has supported the building of 19 homes, and at the ceremony in 2001 we were represented at the Hindu Temple by UKJAID representatives (including two rabbis) and a message from Jonathan Sacks. We were introduced to Prince Charles at the ceremony.

Malawi - Chembe AIDS Project (CAP) – Malawi

From September to December 2002 we raised £50,000 for famine Relief in Southern Africa. One of the projects supported was the CAP - an HIV/AIDS project in Chembe, Malawi, set up by two Israeli women introduced to us by Israeli colleagues.

In 2001 World Jewish Aid adopted the school in the village in order to enhance the education the children were getting. We have ensured that education has continued to the 5th grade and we are now embarking on a period of consolidation and expansion.

Roma Social Office, Macedonia
The World Jewish Aid Social Office in the town of Kumanovo acts as a mediator and liaison between the Roma and the state institutions responsible for social protection, obtaining the relevant information and dealing with the intimidating bureaucracy involved in claiming social benefits.
